It's all about the butt

It's all about the butt. No truer words have been spoken. The butt also known as the gluteus maximus and is one of the largest and strongest muscles in the body. These powerful muscles are an athletes engine and propel them forward in competition. However, often times these muscles become deactivated and don't function 100%. They can become deactivated because we sit to much, our hip flexors are too tight and powerful or perhaps we've sustained an injury.

Isolating the gluteus maximus can be difficult and often many will engage the hamstrings (along the back of the thigh) instead of the gluteus maximus. There are several ways to activate these muscles and some exercises are more advanced then others. Utilizing an exercise ball is an intermediate level exercise for engaging the gluteus maximus.
