Single leg squat exercise

The single leg squat exercise is probably one of the most effective performance and recovery exercises available. Additionally, many clinicians have published that the single leg squat is a practical way to assess leg strength and balance. Sometimes simple is best.  But unfortunately, it seems many fitness enthusiast try to "out-do" one another by creating ultra complex exercises that typically are not functional. My mantra is keep exercises challenging yet simple and functional.

Using a stability ball during the single leg squat allows the user to perform a squat in a partially assisted position. More importantly, the user presses the upper body into the ball making it more functional since we rarely squat straight up and down during activity. This exercise is also a great progression for those who cannot yet perform a single leg squat during rehabilitation. To make it more advanced simply add weights, perform with shoes off, or stand on an unstable surface.
